What's in the Air at Hands On?

Thursday 15 May 2008
Science Oxford's Hands On Science Gallery opens its new temporary exhibition at the beginning of Half Term holidays next Saturday. ‘The Air in There’ allows children to discover the amazing properties of the atmosphere which surrounds us. In addition, ‘The Flight Show’ on Thursday 29 May will give families the chance to explore the science of flying.

‘The Air in There’, starting on Saturday 24 May and finishing 12 July, will give children and their families the opportunity to build an air-powered car, learn about aerodynamics by making an aerofoil-shaped wing, find out about buoyancy by entering the Cartesian Diver challenge , and much much more. All activities will allow visitors to learn by doing and having fun and, though aimed at children aged 5 to 12, they will equally keep older children or adults entertained.

On Thursday 29 May, during the Half Term holidays, ‘The Flight Show’ offers an insight in the science of flying by answering questions like "How many helium balloons would it take to lift up a child?" or "How does a plane stay up in the air?". An interactive show will look at the forces involved in lighter-than-air and powered flight and the audience will have a chance afterwards to try out some activities including making the fastest paper aeroplane.
