The Truth About Hypnosis

Tuesday 15 April 2008
Throughout history, hypnosis has always had the power to capture people’s imagination but its potential misuses have also been the source of wide controversy. Oxfordshire residents will have the opportunity to examine the issues surrounding this intriguing subject at Science Oxford on 23 April at 7.30pm.

‘The Truth About Hypnosis’ will look at what happens in the brain when under hypnosis and will tackle the hypnotic susceptibility of the audience. The evening will be led by Dr Peter Naish, Senior Lecturer in Cognitive Psychology at the Open University, and Chair of Council of the British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis.

Dr Naish says ‘There is evidence to suggest that some people are more receptive to hypnosis than others and we will explore this with our audience on Wednesday night’.

Dominic McDonald, Head of Public Programmes at Science Oxford says ‘I am very excited about this event which links a popular subject with scientific principles about how the brain works.’

This event is part of ‘Inside the Brain’, a series of exhibition and events looking at the workings of the human brain in different contexts. The series includes ‘Scribing the Soul’ exhibition, an insight into The Teenage Brain and a guide to Alzheimer’s Disease with Baroness Susan Greenfield.
