Personality Disorders on the Big Screen

Monday 23 June 2008
From ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ in 1931, to ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ in 2007, the movies have had a fascination with characters struggling to control their own identity. On Wednesday 9 July, Science Oxford invites you to explore how far they have succeeded, in the company of science writer and broadcaster Rita Carter, author of ‘Multiplicity - The Groundbreaking New Science of Personality’.

Rita will examine how the cinema has tackled multiple personality disorders and the concept of identity. She will also discuss how films have depicted the social impacts of these illnesses. Her talk will be followed by a screening of ‘The Three Faces of Eve’ featuring Joanne Woodward’s 1957 Oscar-winning performance as a woman coming to terms with her multiple personalities.

Emma Wightman, Events and Exhibition Officer at Science Oxford says ‘We are delighted that Rita Carter has agreed to come to Science Oxford. By using both film and discussion we hope she will shed new light on this fascinating subject.’
